Managing CKD
Chronic Kidney Disease, or CKD, doesn’t have to mean big disruptions in your life, but there are a few key points on how to manage the condition.
Be diligent on your medication – Always take your medication as prescribed even when you feel okay. Your medication is one of your best defenses against long term damage and other serious problems. Remember that vitamins, supplements, and painkillers may affect your medication and to alert the doctor if you are taking other things along with your CKD medication.
Move your body – The more active you can stay, the better your health will be. Movement can help you sleep better, prevent depression, boost your energy levels, and help lower the risk of heart disease and other problems.
Change your diet – Forgo fast food and find good healthy meals to eat. While this increases your overall health, it can also be a key point in reducing the risk of future problems with CKD.
Keep vices in check – Stop smoking and alcohol consumption if possible. Smoking has been known to make kidney disease worsen and alcohol can spike your blood pressure.
Stay vaccinated – Keep your immune system boosted with flu shots and other vaccines that may be needed. These may change as you get older, but your primary care physician can keep you on a good timeline for your shots.
Lower your blood pressure – Keeping your blood pressure at or below 140/90 mm Hg is another great way to reduce your CKD complications.
