Getting Ready for Flu Season

Here’s what you can do to protect your family from the flu virus.

Here at RMS Consultations, our Southfield, MI, physician Dr. Antoine Geffrard and his team believe in preventing disease rather than just treating the problem once it occurs. As we get ready for the colder months ahead, we also need to think about our health, particularly protecting against the influenza virus. The CDC reports that more than 200,000 people are hospitalized with the flu each year. Why not protect you and your family from the flu?

Get Vaccinated
The best way to protect you and those you love from getting the flu is by getting the flu shot this year. The CDC recommends this shot for anyone over six months old, and the vaccine is designed to protect you all year long during flu season. If you want to keep the flu from running ramped in your house, then talk to our Southfield, MI, medical team here at RMS Consultations about getting vaccinated this year.

Practice Good Hygiene
We’ve definitely been hearing a lot more about how to wash your hands properly and stay healthy this year. The same practices that you’ve been reading and hearing about throughout the year will also come in handy during the flu season. It’s important that you are washing your hands (front, back, between the fingers, and under the nails) for at least twenty seconds with antibacterial soap and water.

Disinfect All Surfaces
It’s amazing just how quickly bacteria and viruses can buildup on kitchen counters, tabletops, and other surfaces. It’s important that you are disinfecting items from cell phones and remotes to doorknobs and kitchen cabinets to kill any viruses or bacteria that could be present. If you’ve had visitors come to your house, it’s also a good idea to disinfect everything once they leave.

Avoid People
If you know someone who is sick, it’s important that avoid them or at the very least keep your distance. If you are caring for someone who is sick, it’s important that you wash your hands before and immediately after caring for them. Make sure to avoid touching or rubbing or eyes, nose, or face, especially after being in public places or around someone who may be ill.
