Common Acute Diseases

Whether you know it or not, you've probably been affected by an acute disease at some point in your life. This category of illness includes health Doctorsproblems that come on suddenly and resolve relatively quickly. Some acute diseases, like colds, need to run their courses, but others do require medical intervention. Read below to learn more about three different acute diseases that are routinely diagnosed by Dr. Antoine Geffrard's Southfield, MI, practice, RMS Consultations.

Strep throat

Caused by Streptococcus bacteria, the hallmark symptoms of strep include a painfully scratchy, swollen throat and a high fever. Tender, enlarged lymph nodes just under your jaw are also a common sign of strep. A quick swab of your throat will test for the presence of the bacteria, and if it the condition is confirmed, antibiotics will be able to clear it up in a few days. It's important to have strep throat checked out and treated promptly to avoid the rare but potentially dangerous development of rheumatic fever.

Urinary tract infection

Burning pain during urination, an urge to urinate without much production, pelvic discomfort, and a low-grade fever are sure signs that you have a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTIs can be caused by bacteria or sexual activity and affect women more often than men. Getting tested for a UTI at our Southfield, MI, office will allow you to get the right antibiotics to clear up the condition.

Conjunctivitis

Better known as pinkeye, bacterial conjunctivitis happens when germs get in the eye and cause the tissues inside to become inflamed and itchy. White or yellow discharge is also common, particularly in the morning. Pinkeye is a common issue amongst preschool and elementary-aged children due to lax hygiene and close quarters. This type of conjunctivitis typically responds well to antibiotic eye drops.
